The Most Important Cosmic Impact In Our Solar System's History
The Most Important Impact Event in the History of the Solar System The universe may mostly be empty space, but if we have all the time to observe it, we are bound to see objects clashing onto each other causing a massive impact to where it is. Join us in this episode as we take a journey to know more about what happens when worlds – LITERALLY – collide. Subscribe for more! ?https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNYaxPiba3oxmeL_3jKxnYA?sub_confirmation=1? As the Solar System evolved from a simple cloud of dust swirling around a proto star, to what we know it today, it is unavoidable that a lot of space objects will eventually collide with one another. It’s just basic thermodynamics. The amount of disorder will increase over time. We call these collisions cosmic impact, or impact events. These happen when astronomical objects such as asteroids, planets, meteorites, and comets – generally speaking – crash into one another, resulting in scalable impact around it. This effect can vary from a simple creation of a crater on a planetary surface, like what we see on the Moon, or to something as grand as the creation of a new moon, like what happened to the Earth when the asteroid Theia collided with it. These events are fairly regular to our Solar System, but the one of the biggest of them all, the one that brought a massive change, was the event that we poetically call, The Late Heavy Bombardment: a hypothesized event in the Solar System’s history where a large number of planetesimals, like comets, meteors and asteroids collided with other planets, particularly the terrestrial ones, producing massive effects. This is a very aggressive period in the timeline of our Solar System, especially to the inner planets, since they – or we – are the ones that gravely experienced this cataclysmic event. For the sake of the video, and since saying “The Late Heavy Bombardment” is such a tedious task, we will refer to this event as LHB from this point moving forward. We’re the generation of abbreviations anyway, aren’t we? What caused the LHB? To fully understand what resulted to the LHB, we need to go back to when our Solar System was still at its infant stages, before there were planets and moons moving about. Like all stellar systems, our very own sun once began as a young star surrounded by a cloud of dust and gas which we collectively spin around to form a protoplanetary disc. Some particles garner in the disc clumped together, and due to their own weak gravity, they formed pebble-sized planetesimals, which then attracted more and more of its kind, and a few other particles, eventually forming what we know today as planets, asteroids, dwarf planets and comets. The planets attempt to stabilize their own orbits, and the very first ones to be successful at this feat are the inner planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. But what about the Jovian planets? Well, they’re an entirely different story. Now, we are getting closer to the LHB. Enter our two giants, Jupiter and Saturn. At the early stages, their orbits were extremely unstable, as it is still trying to find a “sweet spot”, or in a manner it can move at a constant speed without disturbance. Because of how their orbits influenced one another, it produced an effect that scientists call a 2:1 resonance, meaning every 1 part of Jupiter’s orbit equates to 2 parts of Saturn’s. This caused an irregularity in the gravitational force to the objects that are close to them. Now, enter to the picture our two last planets, Uranus and Neptune. Neptune wasn’t always the “youngest” in the Solar System, being placed in last. Once upon a time, it was closer to the Sun, and Uranus was actually the last planet in the line. But because of the resonance from the two large planets, it was destabilized out of its orbit until it was pushed away to the farthest region of the Solar System. At this place, the planetesimals were still moving about. Since Neptune was sent out to their area, it caused a disturbance in their constant motion, and a lot of the planetesimals were kicked away to different directions. Space debris was flying everywhere. Some moved away from the Solar System, while others moved towards the inner planets, and became the components of the Late Heavy Bombardment. This is the most popular hypothesis on what possibly caused the LHB. There are several others that attempt to give an explanation, such as: the late formation of the outermost planets, Uranus and Neptune; the presence of a fifth inner planet with an unstable orbit, and; the disruption of an asteroid crossing Mars. Lunar Cataclysm: The AKA of the LHB Another terminology used to refer to the Late Heavy Bombardment was Lunar Cataclysm, as this event heavily changed the topology of the Moon. The Loneliest Planet: How Is Life On Rogue Planets?
From what it is, to what it might be like to live there, join me as we explore The Loneliest Planet: HOw is LIfe on Rogue Planets? I know what you're thinking, "wait, what is a rogue planet?" Out there, somewhere in the universe, are planets that are both just like all the others in the universe, and yet are infinitely different. These are known as Rogue Planets. And they're called that for a very simple reason. It's because these planets, for whatever reason, were born to the universe...without being tied to a star. Confused? I'll explain. If you believe in the big bang version of the creation of the universe, then you believe that when the "boom" of matter" happened, it flung everything out into the universe at large, and is even still expanding to this day. Galaxies formed via gravitational forces via the stars and planets that were made. Yet, the force apparently "kicked out" many planets, and they're now roaming the universe at large. There's even speculation that a rogue planet is just outside our solar system. The idea of other planets being just outside our realm is rather enticing, but it's also scary. Because a new planet suddenly appearing could throw our solar system into chaos. And if it's going fast enough as it hurdles through space, it could even crash into another planet. Maybe even Earth. There are some scientists who believe that the Earth has already collided with a rogue planet. And it was this collision that created the moon that we see above us. Showing that even in great destruction, there can be wonderful creation. Now the question should be asking is, "well how do we know that these Rogue Planets exist?" A very sound question given our more "rooted" place in the universe as well as how we are able to look at the stars and galaxies around us. Basically, we noticed some oddities as we looked at the stars themselves. In 2011, a study was published via scientists from Osaka University. They looked at over 50 million stars and noticed over 170 anomalies that didn't make sense at first. Objects that were bending light in a way that most objects don't. As they looked deeper, they realized that the majority of these objects were bending lights from stars or other objects, making them stand out from the crowd if you will. But ten of these objects were revealed to be not be anywhere close to any stars. What's more, they were as large as planets, and sometimes even as large as certain types of stars! It was here that we truly found Rogue Planets, and realized that they were moving through space at great speeds despite not having a tether to a parent star. So how do they move then? Well, not unlike virtually every object in the Milky Way Galaxy, they are tethered loosely by the galaxy itself, which has a gravity field that keeps the stars and planets in line so that they "go with the flow" of the galaxy if you will while not shooting out into other galaxies or deep space. The problem with Rogue Planets though is that because they don't have a closer tether to orbit around (like the Earth does with the sun) it's only loosely guided by the pull of the galaxy itself, and thus hurdles through unknown reaches of space. In many ways, a Rogue Planet is the "loneliest planet" in the universe. Not because it may not have life on it (which we'll get to in a bit), but because unlike virtually every other planet in the known universe, it doesn't get the light of a sun to show off its beauty, or get the warmth of the star to help make it more than what it is. And because it's a Rogue Planet (based on our knowledge of planets and their relationships to their stars) scientists believe that the whole entity is cold, frozen, and dark. Now, we noted a little bit earlier that these Rogue Planets were "kicked out" of their systems and that they're going through space at a good clip, but how fast are they going exactly? Well, we honestly don't know, because it's really hard to find and track these planets, however, we can do some comparisons based on a certain other thing we know can go rogue...a star. That's right, stars have gone rogue in the past and we've been able to track them, and when they go throughout space without a tether, they can reach speeds of up to 1.5 million miles per hour. So does that mean a Rogue Planet can go that fast? Sure, it could, but more than likely, it goes a lot faster. Why is that? Do recall that stars and planets may have similar sizes at times, but that doesn't mean they have the same mass. A star always has more mass than a planet, and so since Rogue Planets are smaller than stars and have less mass, that means that it takes less time and effort to move through space. So, knowing this fact based on basic physics, scientists have calculated that Rogue Planets could barrel through space at a rate of 10-30 million miles per hour.

Why Is Pluto No Longer a Planet?!
Be like SMART BANANA: https://goo.gl/JTfP6L Smart Banana declares ‘There are officially, eight planets in the solar system.’ Pluto is no longer a part of an exclusive club. What does that mean? Firstly, it means that all the existing textbooks will have to be rewritten and secondly, it means that Pluto has a new circle of friends. Let’s see how it all happened. Well, it's all quite simple. American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto in 1930 (0:39). From 1930 until 2006, Pluto felt himself comfortably as the ninth planet in our solar system. But everything changed in 2006. No, the truth is, that Pluto didn't change in size, shape, color etc. But the definition of a planet did. Once these changes became official, Pluto no longer fit the definition of a planet. More about new criterias in order to qualify something as a planet you can find here 2:03. Betelgeuse Is Still Dimming! And We Have the Pictures to Prove It
Near the end of 2019, astronomers watching the red giant Betelgeuse noted how much the star had dimmed, continuing to steadily fade for months. It’s a variable star, and it’s known to get dimmer and brighter, but the big surprise is that it’s still continuing to dim, recently passing magnitude 1.56 and still getting dimmer. This is unprecedented in the decades that astronomers have been watching the star. The world’s biggest telescopes are on the case, and the European Southern Observatory released dramatic new images of Betelguese, resolving features on the star’s surface and surrounding area showing how it’s dramatically changed over the course of 2019. In reality, it's "only" 11 trillion times brighter than the Sun, but it is being magnified by a factor of 50 due to a gravitational lens. This makes J0439 the highest redshifted quasar seen through a gravitational lens. 🔔 Subscribe for more: https://www.youtube.com/christianready?sub_confirmation=1 🖖 Share this video with a fellow space traveler: https://youtu.be/pJ08d6vIcAw 🔴 Watch my most recent upload: https://goo.gl/QbRcE2 🚀 Help me improve the channel by joining the community on Patreon - https://ift.tt/2TVqkQ0 🚀 Check out Launch Pad merchandise! https://ift.tt/2JoLJNc Disclaimer: Some of these links go to one of my websites and some are affiliate links where I'll earn a small commission if you make a purchase at no additional cost to you. 🐟 From out of town? To cut a long story short: On Mercury it’s quite likely that some kind of meteorite would crash on the surface and kill you. Venus has a very hot and thick atmosphere. You would not survive a visit to the surface of the planet - you would burn up in temperatures high enough to melt lead. On Mars you’ll get multiple burns because you can’t hide from the UV radiation anywhere. Jupiter will only welcome you for 1 second before crushing you with raging winds and hurricanes. And so on and so force. Once the Earth is definitely the place. The habitable zone of the solar system makes Earth a real gem for the development of life. It is neither too hot nor too cold to support liquid water - thought to be a key ingredient for the birth of various life forms. Could Earth Turn Into The Next Venus?
From what Venus was like billions of years ago, to how that could turn into a greenhouse planet, join us as we explore whether Earth could turn into the next Venus. You all know the words "Global Warming", and over the last year or two especially there's been a lot of pushing to either get active to stop it, or to admonish it and say that it's "not real". Sadly, Global Warming is very real, and it's a very real threat to our planet, and if we don't do things to try and save the planet, it's very possible that we might end up like a certain other planet in our solar system. Mainly...Venus. What about the Venus Theory? If you don't know, Venus is a very hot planet, in fact it's 864 degrees Fahrenheit on average. Which if you didn't know is enough to melt lead and cause problems for other materials as well. At present, that we know of, there is no life on Venus due to both its atmosphere (which is made up of mostly Carbon Dioxide) and its temperatures. So you might be wondering, "How can we end up like Venus when we clearly have a much different type of planet than it?" Well that's the thing, scientists believe that once upon a time, the planet Venus was a lot like the Earth...until something caused it to change for the worse. How and why are they saying this? Well, Venus has been under study for quite some time due to its extreme temperatures and atmosphere, not to mention it's our "twin" planet. So, scientists have been using simulation technology to try and determine what Venus was like BEFORE it was the heat-blasting planet it is now. And they state that between 2-3 billion years ago...it may have been very much like Earth. With temperatures that weren't the in the hundreds of degrees, and maybe even having its own ocean. “Many of the same tools we use to model climate change on Earth can be adapted to study climates on other planets, both past and present,” said Michael Way, a researcher at GISS and the paper’s lead author. “These results show ancient Venus may have been a very different place than it is today.” Now to be clear, the simulations don't say that Venus was an EXACT match to Earth, as Venus as a whole has many different things than Earth. For example, its rotation, Earth rotates on its axis every 24 hours. Venus does it in the course of 117 days. Also, the simulations state that "ancient Venus" was more land-heavy than Earth, and that its oceans were relatively shallow. Not that this would've dissuaded potential life on the planet, but rather it would've been slightly different conditions than Earth in its early days. So, IF this is all true, and IF Venus was very much like Earth in the early billions of its lifetime...what happened? Well, this is where conflicting theories come to pass. Because for the longest time, it was believed that because Venus was closer to the sun, and thus was more exposed to its sunlight, that it was the cause of Venus turning into what we have now. But according to GISS, that's not exactly what happened: “In the GISS model’s simulation, Venus’ slow spin exposes its dayside to the sun for almost two months at a time,” co-author and fellow GISS scientist Anthony Del Genio said. “This warms the surface and produces rain that creates a thick layer of clouds, which acts like an umbrella to shield the surface from much of the solar heating. The result is mean climate temperatures that are actually a few degrees cooler than Earth’s today.” This meant that the sunlight likely WASN'T the main reason that Venus is now a Greenhouse Effect planet. So what was it? What made Venus the burning hot planet that it is right now? Well, according to many, including the Europlanet Society, they think that a massive "global event" caused the planet to get much, much hotter: "It is possible that the near-global resurfacing event is responsible for its transformation from an Earth-like climate to the hellish hot-house we see today." But what was that event? What could've turned Venus from a habitable planet in every sense of the word...to one that honestly just...wasn't? Sadly, we don't know the answer, and that horrifies many people because that means we can't exactly prepare for what may happen if we don't know what happened to our neighbor. However, we can generalize the action and/or event itself. Because at some point in its lifetime, Venus went from doing a balanced absorption and releasing of heat, not unlike what we have here on Earth, to an imbalance. One where heat was absorbed to a great extent than it was being released. "Basically, Venus was in a state of heat stroke — the planet was in a warming state and it couldn't cool down," said Tyler Robinson, an astrobiologist at the University of Washington. Again, how exactly this happened, we don't know, but it is easy to plot how that "heat stroke" affected the planet and turned it into what we have now. First off, the increased heat would have slowly but surely evaporated the oceans.

In ancient cultures of India, in some tribes of Africa and South America, the influence of odors even on everyday life is very important, because the different smells are used in traditional rituals. For example, in black magic rituals in order to attract the evil spirits were often used harmful or poisonous substances with unpleasant odors. It is known that such sacrificial gifts as dried blood or red pepper were thrown into the fire especially to provoke a bad smell. Sounds crazy, huh? For the past century and a half, since the dawn of electric light, we’ve been losing our connection to the night. We need artificial light for modern society, of course. The problem is, we need darkness for our health, and for the health of wildlife and ecosystems, and we’re not getting enough of it. Betelgeuse Is Continuing To Dim: What' s Really Happening?
From what it could mean, to the various reasons for this phenomenon happening at all, join me as we explore betelgeuse continuing to DIM! What' s really happening? Out in space in the Orion constellation, there is a very bright star in our night sky known Betelgeuse. To put it most simply, it is a red supergiant, and one that dwarfs many others stars in the sky. Such as the big star known as Rigel which it outsizes in a rather significant way. Mainly because this star is 1.3 BILLION kilometers long. That's basically three times the size of Rigel, which for the record is 97 million kilometers long. So yeah, definitely not a small star. For a comparison, if some kind of cosmic event somehow dropped this massive star into our own solar system and replaced our own sun with it (which obviously won't happen but why ruin the moment here?), the mass of Betelgeuse would basically destroy everything from the point of the sun all the way until Jupiter more than likely. So you should be glad this isn't a thing that likely will happen...hopefully. Betelgeuse is also the 10th brightest star in the sky overall, and it’s the 7th brightest star visible from most of the U.S., Canada, Europe and the majority of the Northern Hemisphere. What's that? How big is Betelgeuse compared to the Earth? I'm glad you asked! The Earth is about 40,000 kilometers long in circumference. Which means that this supergiant is 32,500 times bigger than us. That's a lot. Like really, that's a lot of mass for a single star. So yeah, that's Betelgeuse on a very basic level. But there is more going on here with this star than you realize. Including the fact that one day this star is supposed to go Supernova, and when that happens, it'll be a big deal in space for reasons we can talk about another time. But what's getting a lot of people's attention right NOW is that Betelguese is dimming. Likely in the literal sense, the star is dimming in a way that is clearly intentional/forced, and many astronomers are trying to figure out what's going on with it. "Wait a minute", you say, "didn't you just note that the star is going to go supernova one day? Couldn't this be a lead-up to that event happening?" A good question, and most times, we would say yes, as this would be an indication that the star was in the last phases of its current life and could/should go supernova at any moment. But, the problem is that based on projections of the star itself in terms of its life, it's not SUPPOSED to go Supernova for tens of thousands of years yet. Which means that this "dimming" is an atypical event, and one that scientists want to figure out. What's more, in a more recent report about the dimming itself, Villanova University astronomers Edward Guinan and Richard Wasatonic noted that while the dimming is still going on, it's happening at a much slower rate than before. Which just makes the whole situation even more odd. Now I'm sure you're wondering just how dim the star is actually getting, and that's a good question as well. I could bore you with talk about "magnitudes" or brightness, but let's just get to the heart of the matter. Over the course of the last few months, Betelgeuse has basically lost half of its usual brightness. And for a star to go from its normal shine to about half in a few months is very unprecedented in a star that isn't about to die. Also, to be clear, astronomers have been watching Betelgeuse for a very long time, in fact, they've been keeping their eyes on this star for over 180 years! And at no point in time since they've been watching it has the brightness ever gone that low. It's at record lows even, and when you plot it all out on a chart, you see just how weird this rapid dimming is, and it's got a lot of people in the science field scratching their heads. “The unusual behavior of Betelgeuse should be closely watched.” noted one scientist watching the situation. Another thing to note is that as the star starts to dim, its temperature drops as well. Since September 2019, the temperature of Betelgeuse has lowered by 100 Kelvin. If that continues, it could affect the star in a way that we're not expecting. Of course, it's entirely possible that this IS the path to it detonating itself and becoming a supernova. We just don't think this is the case. The life of stars is a very curious thing. As they burn very, VERY brightly in the sky, and that affects a lot of things around them. Take Earth for example. If our star burned less brightly, and thus less hot, our planet wouldn't be in very good shape. In fact, our star is quite literally perfect in regards to how far it is from Earth, the light and heat it emits, and even how much radiation it pumps out into space itself. But that last bit is another topic entirely. To burn like it does, it has a very particular balance of energy within itself. This balance is between the gasses it creates, and the gasses it burns.
