It was also one of the songs he performed during his 1972 appearance in The Muppet Show (although he had to get rid of one of the verses because it's a family-friendly show). Is it Possible To Travel Faster Than The Speed Of Light?
The world has definitely come to a fast pace in terms of daily living, but what is the fastest speed that everyone in the universe can go to? Can we go beyond that? That’s what we’re gonna find out in today’s episode! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe for more videos:https://www.youtube.com/c/InsaneCuriosity?sub_confirmation=1? Business Enquiries: lorenzovareseaziendale@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have watched the animated series of Pokemon, it’s impossible to have missed the following lines: “Team Rocket, blast off at the speed of light! Surrender now or prepare to fight!” Said of course, by the ragtag duo of wanna be antagonists of the show, the Team Rocket. If you’re like me who thinks a lot about stuff I hear, you might have pondered about that penultimate line. Blasting off in the speed of light? Is it really possible to get something to move to the tune of the fastest speed of the universe, the speed of light? Well, we know that there aren’t any intergalactic police to monitor whether or not we’re going beyond the universal speed limit, but what exactly is preventing us from going beyond this anyway? These are two heavy questions that we will answer today, but I wanna know what you guys think about these? Do you think we can go faster than the speed of light? Or do you think it’s pretty much impossible? Let us know in the comments section down below. I know a lot of you already have the right answer to thes, but let’s play the devil’s advocate here for a bit, shall we? So how about we define first the speed of light so that we don’t get all confused by the variances? First and foremost, at least in the spirit of this video, when we say speed of light is constant, the speed of light that we are talking about here has two main characteristics. First, this is the speed of light in uninterrupted space, or vacuum. Second, we are talking about the speed of light in an unchanged space time, or a flat space time. Basically how we would normally see space, absent from the effects of other factors. In case this is the first time you are hearing all about this, the speed of light is estimated to be 299 792 458 m/s, or around 3 times 10 to the eighth meters per second. If you’re not a fan of the metric -- or residing in the USA -- that’s around 186282 miles per second. One of the earliest experimentations leading to the concept of the speed of light being constant is done by one of the biggest names in Physics, Galileo. This is how his experiment went. He and an assistant, which we will name Vinny for the sake of the story, would stand at the top of two hills, carrying each a light source -- which would most probably be a lamp, considering the time of the experiment. The lamp would be completely covered, with a shutter to effectively “flash” light. Galileo would then remove the shutter, which would be the signal for Vinny to remove his as well. Then, Galileo would record the time he saw the flash. He then repeated the same experiment and found out that no matter how far he went, he records the same time of flash. At that point, his conclusion was that light must either be really, really fast or that it is constant. To which the latter sounds extremely ridiculous that time. Why? Stay tuned to find out. And come 1676, Ole Roemer verified that the speed of light is indeed constant by observing the moons Jupiter. However, this fact gets highlighted hundreds of years later when a brilliant mind named Albert Einstein came up with his paper in the theory of relativity: one of the most important and groundbreaking publications in Physics in the history of mankind! So far, at least. To be able to understand his point, we need to first understand how relativity is defined in a classical sense. For instance, say that you are riding a train moving at a constant speed, let’s call that speed “v”, and one friend of yours is looking at you outside of the train on platform. Europa Clipper Mission, A Potentially Habitable Ocean World!
If you’re a Jupiter lover and a stargazer, then you probably observed Europa; one of Jupiter's Galilean moons, and you probably wondered if humans ever visited this moon, or at least sent a spacecraft! Well, you’re in luck, because soon, a spacecraft will indeed visit Europa! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe for more videos:https://www.youtube.com/c/InsaneCuriosity?sub_confirmation=1? Business Enquiries: lorenzovareseaziendale@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We appreciate NASA is finally dedicating a special mission to discover Jupiter’s icy and cold moon Europa! If you’re not familiar with Europa from stargazing nights, at least you might have seen it in one of NASA’s spectacular photos. Even though no past missions have been especially dedicated to visiting Europa, a few missions did in fact fly past it or observe it up close. These missions are: Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, and the most recent is the Galileo spacecraft that launched back in 1989. In addition to these past missions, NASA constantly monitors Europa using the Hubble Space Telescope that observed evidence for water plumes on the moon back in 2012. But, if we can already study Europa using past flybys and the Hubble Space Telescope, then why do we need a special mission to go there? That’s a very good question, studying Europa up close serves one of NASA’s and humanity’s biggest long term goals, which is searching for extraterrestrial life. Now, you might think searching for life outside Earth means going off to a far away galaxy and exploring planets thousands of light years away. And while that possibility is taken under consideration, we must also not neglect the vast possibilities of extraterrestrial life inside our own solar system. And what better place to start looking than a moon that’s speculatively rich in sub-surface salty water with a thin oxygen atmosphere. Europa falls under the classification “Ocean World” and that’s because past missions have suggested the existence of oceans underneath the moon’s icy crust. Oceans so vast, their volume is estimated to be around 3 billion cubic kilometers, that’s more than double the volume of Earth’s oceans! And in expression of the importance of further discovering Europa, Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters, said: “We are all excited about the decision that moves the Europa Clipper mission one key step closer to unlocking the mysteries of this ocean world,” Now that we have discussed why we must further study Europa, and you’re hopefully convinced with the reasons presented, let’s start talking about the mission. The mission is called “Europa Clipper” and it’s a collaboration between NASA and the “Jet propulsion Laboratory” in Caltech and the “Applied Physics Laboratory” in Johns Hopkins University. “Europa Clipper” is designed as an orbiter to perform multiple flybys of Europa to comprehensively study all areas of the moon, the spacecraft will be 6 meters (~20 feet) high with huge solar panels measuring 22 meters (72 feet) across. And to talk back to Earth, “Europa Clipper” will be equipped with a 3 meters (~10 feet) high gain antenna. Orbiting Jupiter once every two weeks, “Europa Clipper” will perform a total of about 45 close flybys, the spacecraft’s altitude above Europa will vary from 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) at the closest point to 2,700 kilometers (1677 miles) at the farthest point. NASA is sending “Europa Clipper” to help scientists and astrobiologists answer big questions in science, therefore the mission has clear and concise scientific goals: 1- Determining the characteristics of the sub-surface ocean, alongside looking for water in the moon’s outer shell and measuring its thickness. 2- Studying chemical components in Europa’s atmosphere, and their origin. 3- Measuring Europa’s magnetic field and determining its various parameters. 4- Studying geological activities on the moon and its surface features and looking for suitable landing sites for possible future missions. 5- Investigating Europa’s capabilities to host life as we know it on Earth which provides progress into astrobiology. To tackle these goals, a wide range of scientific instruments are on board “Europa Clipper”, the mission has 9 various instruments to make sure scientists have all they need up there to do the science. The Brightest Stars In the Universe
There are countless stars that we can see in our night sky, and all of them are unique. Some are dim such that they are barely visible without a telescope. Others are bright and can be seen even in the most light-polluted areas. The brightness of a star depends on its composition and its location relative to our planet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe for more videos:https://www.youtube.com/c/InsaneCuriosity?sub_confirmation=1? Business Enquiries: lorenzovareseaziendale@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- Sirius, All stars shine but none do it like Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. Aptly named, Sirius comes from the Greek word Seirius, meaning, "searing" or "scorching." Blazing at a magnitude of minus 1.42, it's twice as bright as any star in our sky besides the Sun. Sirius resides in the constellation Canis Major, the Big Dog, and is commonly called the Dog Star. In ancient Greece the dawn rising of Sirius marked the hottest part of summer—the season's "dog days." 2- Canopus, Canopus resides in the constellation Carina, the Keel. Carina is one of three modern-day constellations that once formed the ancient constellation of Argo Navis, named for the ship Jason and the Argonauts sailed in to search for the Golden Fleece. Two other constellations form the sail (Vela) and the stern (Puppis). In modern odysseys, spacecraft like Voyager 2 used the light from Canopus to orient themselves in the sea of space. Canopus is a true powerhouse. Its brilliance is due more to its great luminosity than its proximity. 3- Alpha Centauri, Alpha Centauri (or Rigel Kentaurus, as it is also known) is actually a system of three stars gravitationally bound together. The two main stars are Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B. The tiniest star in the system is Alpha Centauri C, a red dwarf. The Alpha Centauri system is a special one. At an average distance from us of 4.3 light-years, these stars are our nearest known stellar neighbors. Centauri A and B are remarkably Sun-like, with Centauri A a near twin of the Sun (both are yellow G stars). 4- Arcturus, Arcturus is the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere. (The first three stars on this list are actually in the southern celestial sphere, though seasonally they are visible from the northern hemisphere of Earth). Known as the Bear Watcher, Arcturus follows Ursa Major, the Great Bear, around the north celestial pole. 5- Vega, The name Vega comes from the Arabic word for "swooping eagle" or "vulture." Vega is the luminary of Lyra, the Harp, a small but prominent constellation that is home to the Ring Nebula (M57) and the star Epsilon Lyrae. The ring is a luminous shell of gas resembling a smoke ring or a doughnut that was ejected from an old star. Epsilon Lyrae appears to the naked eye as a double star, but through a small telescope you can see that each of the two individual stars is itself a double! Epsilon Lyrae is popularly known as the "double double." 6- Capella, Capella is the primary star in the constellation Auriga (the Charioteer), and the brightest star near to the north celestial pole. Capella is actually a fascinating star system of four stars: two similar class-G yellow-giant stars and a pair of much fainter red-dwarf stars. 7- Rigel, On the western heel of Orion, the Hunter, rests brilliant Rigel. In myth, Rigel marks the spot where Scorpio, the Scorpion, stung Orion after a brief but fierce battle. Its Arabic name means the Foot. Rigel is a multiple-star system. The brighter component, Rigel A, is a blue supergiant that shines a remarkable 40,000 times stronger than the Sun! Although it's 775 light-years distant, its light shines bright in our evening skies, at magnitude 0.12. 8- Procyon, Procyon resides in the small constellation of Canis Minor, the Little Dog. The constellation symbolizes the smaller of Orion's two hunting dogs (the other is, of course, Canis Major). The word procyon is Greek for "before the dog," for in the northern hemisphere, Procyon announces the rise of Sirius, the Dog Star. 9- Achernar, Achernar is derived from the Arabic phrase meaning "the end of the river," an appropriate name for a star that marks the southernmost flow of the constellation Eridanus, the River. Achernar is the hottest star on this list. 10- Betelgeuse, Don't let Betelgeuse's ranking as the tenth-brightest star in the sky fool you. Its distance—430 light-years—hides the true scale of this supergiant. Did dust darken Betelgeuse, and is it dimming again? New results from the Hubble Space Telescope suggest that Betelgeuse ejected a massive cloud of dense dust that obscured the red supergiant star, and caused the Great Dimming of Betelgeuse in 2019 and early 2020. However, there are still other questions about what caused Betelgeuse to dim that remain unanswered. To make matters even more confusing, astronomers observed Betelgeuse this summer using the STEREO solar observatory. Exoplanet Kepler-1649c Discovered By NASA Is Very Similar To Earth!
From what it is like, to the potential of it being a brand new Earth that we can settle, join me as we explore how Exoplanet Kepler-1649 c discovered by NASA is very similar to Earth! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe for more videos:https://www.youtube.com/c/InsaneCuriosity?sub_confirmation=1? Business Enquiries: lorenzovareseaziendale@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When it comes to space, there are a lot of things that people on Earth are trying to learn or study, but without a doubt the biggest "quest" if you will is them finding another Earth. Or at the very least, another very similar Earth-like planet that'll help us potentially expand across the galaxy. You might think that this is an easy task, and yet, just about every single "Earth-like planet" that we have found over the last several decades have had major issues or problems that prohibit it from being something we truly can colonize. However, we are getting closer, and a brand new planet that has been found proves that we are getting ever closer to that goal. The exoplanet that has been found circles a red dwarf star that lies 300 light-years from Earth, a new study reports. It completes one orbit every 19.5 Earth days, putting the alien planet in its host star's "habitable zone," the just-right range of distances where liquid water could exist on a world's surface. (Because red dwarfs are so dim, their habitable zones lie quite close.) Out of the 2,681 exoplanets spotted by NASA's Kepler space telescope between 2009 and 2018, this one is the most similar in size, and potentially temperature, to our own planet, according to a new study. The planet has been dubbed Kepler-1649c. It's 1.06 times larger than Earth and receives about 75% the amount of light that Earth gets from the sun. This suggests that the surface temperature of the exoplanet could be similar to Earth. Which is a key factor in its potential of being a planet that we can colonize in the future. "This intriguing, distant world gives us even greater hope that a second Earth lies among the stars, waiting to be found," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. "The data gathered by missions like Kepler and our Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) will continue to yield amazing discoveries as the science community refines its abilities to look for promising planets year after year." Before you get your hopes up too much, it definitely needs to be noted that the planet is 300 light years from Earth at present. But, if there's one that is out there that is Earth-like in the ways that matter, it could mean that there may be a closer one in reach. Though even traveling one light year from Earth in a good amount of time is a bit "impossible" for us with our current methods of travel. But in the future? You never know... Before we continue to talk about the planet and our colonizing future, be sure to like or dislike the video, that way we can improve and try to make the best videos possible for you the viewer! And don't forget to subscribe, that way you don't miss ANY of our weekly videos! Going back to how it was found, Kepler hunted for planets using the "transit method," monitoring stars for tiny brightness dips caused by planets crossing their faces from the spacecraft's perspective. Kepler did this in two phases: on its main mission, which lasted until 2013, and during an extended mission called K2, which wrapped up 17 months ago when the spacecraft ran out of fuel. Both of these campaigns were very successful. Kepler spotted about two-thirds of the 4,100 confirmed exoplanets that astronomers have discovered to date. And the spacecraft's observations suggest that 20-25% of the 200 billion or so stars in the Milky Way galaxy host rocky worlds in the habitable zone. That's a lot of potentially life-supporting real estate. "But aren't we looking for more than just 'rocky worlds' to live on?" you might be asking. And the answer is yes, objectively we want to find a world that is as close to Earth as possible, which is why many feel the Alpha Centauri system would be our best bet in the future for galactic colonization. However, as we're proving in our own solar system, we sometimes need to look for our "best options" and make due with the technology that we have. Just like how humanity is preparing to go to Mars despite it not being the most hospitable planet for humans. And as noted, while we've found many "Earth-Like" planets in the universe, we haven't yet found one that is perfectly like Earth. So thus, having all of these "options" gives us some leeway should the worst come to pass and we become desperately in need of a place to say. Credits: Nasa #InsaneCuriosity #Kepler1649c #Exoplanets

Makemake Facts And History: "Easter Bunny" Dwarf Planet!
From its interesting name, to its composition, discovery, and more! Join me as we explore MakeMake: Facts and History! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe for more videos:https://www.youtube.com/c/InsaneCuriosity?sub_confirmation=1? Business Enquiries: lorenzovareseaziendale@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9. What Is MakeMake? Given the rather odd name for the object, you'd be forgiven for not knowing exactly what this entity is on its title alone. It's a Dwarf Planet, and possibly one of the biggest in our solar system. Along with fellow dwarf planets Pluto, Eris and Haumea, it is located in the Kuiper Belt, a region outside the orbit of Neptune. Slightly smaller than Pluto, Makemake is the second-brightest object in the Kuiper Belt as seen from Earth (while Pluto is the brightest). This particular dwarf planet holds an important place in the history of solar system studies because it—along with Eris—was one of the objects whose discovery prompted the International Astronomical Union to reconsider the definition of a planet and to create the new group of dwarf planets. Of which Pluto would be demoted from a full planet to a dwarf planet. Leaving many to wonder what would've happened if this particular set of objects were never discovered at all. Would Pluto still be a planet today? The dwarf planet was named after the Rapanui god of fertility. If you don't know, these are the people who lived on Easter Island. 8. The Discovery Makemake was discovered on March 31, 2005, by a team at the Palomar Observatory, led by Michael E. Brown, and was announced to the public in July of 2005. The team had planned to delay announcing their discoveries of it and Eris until further observations and calculations were complete, but announced them both on July 29 when the discovery of another large object they had been tracking, Haumea, was controversially announced on July 27 by a different team in Spain. There was a bit of a fight over this, but that's another story entirely. Despite its relative brightness (it is about a fifth as bright as Pluto), Makemake was not discovered until after many much fainter Kuiper belt objects. Which no doubt struck the team finding it as odd, among other things. Most searches for minor planets are conducted relatively close to the ecliptic (the region of the sky that the Sun, Moon and planets appear to lie in, as seen from Earth), due to the greater likelihood of finding objects there. It probably escaped detection during the earlier surveys due to its relatively high orbital inclination, and the fact that it was at its farthest distance from the ecliptic at the time of its discovery, in the northern constellation of Coma Berenices. Besides Pluto, Makemake is the only other dwarf planet that was bright enough that Clyde Tombaugh could have detected it during his search for trans-Neptunian planets around 1930. At the time of Tombaugh's survey, it was only a few degrees from the ecliptic, near the border of Taurus and Auriga, at an apparent magnitude of 16.0. This position, however, was also very near the Milky Way, and the dwarf planet would have been almost impossible to find against the dense background of stars. Tombaugh continued searching for some years after the discovery of Pluto, but he did not find Makemake or any other trans-Neptunian objects. Which is now very ironic due to all the various objects we've found in that area since Pluto. Going to show that while the early astronomers were incredibly talented, they did have their limits based on the technology that they wielded. 7. Orbit As of April 2019, Makemake is 52.5 AU from the Sun, almost as far from the Sun as it ever reaches on its orbit. The dwarf planet follows an orbit very similar to that of Haumea: highly inclined at 29° and a moderate eccentricity of about 0.16. But still, its orbit is slightly farther from the Sun in terms of both the semi-major axis and perihelion. Its orbital period is 305 years approximately, more than Pluto's 248 years and Haumea's 285 years. Both it and Haumea are currently far from the ecliptic (at an angular distance of almost 29°). However, it is approaching its 2033 aphelion, whereas Haumea passed its aphelion in early 1992. To put its orbit into context, a human life averages around 70-80 years, but there have been many who have reached 100 or over, so for it to go around the sun once via its orbit is like those people living three lifetimes. Which would be quite a feat indeed. Credits: Ron Miller Credits: Nasa #InsaneCuriosity #MakeMake #TheSolarSystem

The Kardashev Scale: How Far Can Our Civilization Go?
We have come to a point where we can assume how civilizations are going to be in the future. Join me as I explain The Kardashev scale. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe for more videos:https://www.youtube.com/c/InsaneCuriosity?sub_confirmation=1? Business Enquiries: lorenzovareseaziendale@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Kardashev Scale, ranks the technological capabilities of a civilization, according to the energy it is able to manipulate and exploit. The scale was invented in 1964 by the Russian astronomer Nikolai Semenovich Kardashev who was looking for signs of extraterrestrial life within cosmic signals and proposed a scale for ranking these hypothetical civilizations based on their energy consumption. So the Kardashev scale was developed as a way of measuring a civilization’s technological advancement based upon how much usable energy it has at its disposal. The scale has three types that follow the scale of astrophysical structures in our local universe. The basic calibration is based on 3 energy positions on the scale corresponding to the ability to fully manage the energy resources of a inhabited planet (Type I), the star of the respective solar system (Type II) and its galaxy (Type III). Other astronomers have expanded the scale to Type IV and Type V. Samples of civilizations that could correspond to the Kardashev scale are both terrestrial and other supposedly extraterrestrial civilizations. Due to the fact that the American astronomer and astrophysicist Carl Sagan wanted to classify our current civilization, he noticed that we are not Type-I yet and he expanded and calibrated the scale before type I. The reason why human race is not even on type-I yet is because we continue to maintain our energy needs from dea* plants and animals, here on Earth. We are just a humble culture type 0 and we still have VERY long distance to go before promoted to a type I civilization). According to Carl Sagan, in 1900 during the Industrial Revolution period, our terrestrial civilization was at 0.58 while in 2012 it was at 0.72 on the scale. Freeman Dyson estimated that we will probably reach type 1 in 100-200 years, type 2 in the year 11,200 and type 3 in 100,000 to 1,000,000 years. Before we continue with our explanation to the Kardashev Scale, be sure to like or dislike the video so that we can continue improve and make these videos better for you the viewer. Plus, be sure to subscribe to the channel so that you don’t miss any of our weekly videos! Now let's examine on a closer look some features of the 4 energy positions. What does each of these categories really mean in literal terms? Type 0 A type-0 civilization is based on energy which can derive mainly from sources where energy forms are mildly stored and are found before the specific type 1,2,3. Our culture today belongs to type-0, which uses sources such as coal, oil or natural gas. As we mentioned before, it is understood that we have not reached type-1 in the Kardashev scale yet. Type I A Type I civilization has complete control over the energy of its host planet. As a type I civilization, we would be capable of controlling Earth entirely. So this Civilization has managed to tame and consume the energy offered to it by its own planet, which it fully controls. It would, for example, be capable of collecting all the starlight that falls on the planet. However, the ability to harness all of the Earth's energy would also mean that we could have control of all natural forces. The temperature, the climate of the planet could be controlled in the same way that we could control volcanoes, weather conditions and even earthquakes! It is possible that weaving or even earthquakes can be changed at will by this civilization. So we could influence the nature. At least that's the basic idea. These things are hard to believe, but compared to the advances that can be made in the coming years, imagine that these are just basic and primitive levels of control. Type II The next step ? A Type II civilization .This is the next stage in the evolution of a civilization. At this level the inhabitants who make up such a civilization, can harness the power of their mother star, their Sun not only by turning the light of the star into energy, but by controlling the star itself. It would control the orbit of all planets in that system, harvest asteroids and comets at its leisure, and basically consume the entire solar system. For example, if humans survived long enough to reach this level, and an object the size of the Moon entered our solar system with a collision course with our little blue planet, we would have the ability to wipe it out from the ground. Or if we had time, we could move our planet, avoiding it altogether. Credits: Nasa #InsaneCuriosity

7 Minutes of Terror: How Perseverance Will Land on Mars
The stakes are high for NASA's newest rover. Years of hard work and millions of dollars could be burnt into the Martian soil if one mistake has been made! The Perseverance Rover represents the latest in a long line of remote robotic exploration vehicles sent to the red planet over the last 44 years. It seeks to answer further questions raised by it’s predecessor Curiosity – which made its landing on Mars in 2012 and was the most ambitious mission flown by NASA at that time. This ‘little engine that could’ has now been on Mars for almost 8 Earth years – 2835 Mars days to be exact. It has fulfilled it’s primary mission of finding evidence of organic molecules and geological change on Mars. It continues to explore and search for water in the form of ice. All this was possible due to Curiosity's successful landing. But how likely is Perseverance to have a successful touchdown? Thanks for watching ElderFox. Please subscribe and share with your friends. Business Enquiries: lorenzovareseaziendale@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. History Deimos was discovered by Asaph Hall, III at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. on 12 August 1877, at about 07:48 UTC (given in contemporary sources as "11 August 14:40" Washington Mean Time, using a pre-1925 astronomical convention of beginning a day at noon, so 12 hours must be added to get the actual local mean time). Hall also discovered Phobos on 18 August 1877, at about 09:14 GMT, after deliberately searching for Martian moons. It is named after Deimos, a figure representing dread in Greek mythology. The names, at first spelled Phobus and Deimus, were suggested by Henry Madan (1838–1901), Science Master of Eton, from Book XV of the Iliad, where Ares (the Roman god Mars) summons Dread (Deimos) and Fear (Phobos). Hall recorded his discovery of Phobos in his notebook as follows: "I repeated the examination in the early part of the night of 11th [August 1877], and again found nothing, but trying again some hours later I found a faint object on the following side and a little north of the planet. I had barely time to secure an observation of its position when fog from the River stopped the work. This was at half past two o'clock on the night of the 11th. Cloudy weather intervened for several days. On 15 August the weather looking more promising, I slept at the Observatory. The sky cleared off with a thunderstorm at 11 o'clock and the search was resumed. The atmosphere however was in a very bad condition and Mars was so blazing and unsteady that nothing could be seen of the object, which we now know was at that time so near the planet as to be invisible. On 16 August the object was found again on the following side of the planet, and the observations of that night showed that it was moving with the planet, and if a satellite, was near one of its elongations. Until this time I had said nothing to anyone at the Observatory of my search for a satellite of Mars, but on leaving the observatory after these observations of the 16th, at about three o'clock in the morning, I told my assistant, George Anderson, to whom I had shown the object, that I thought I had discovered a satellite of Mars. I told him also to keep quiet as I did not wish anything said until the matter was beyond doubt. He said nothing, but the thing was too good to keep and I let it out myself. On 17 August between one and two o'clock, while I was reducing my observations, Professor Newcomb came into my room to eat his lunch and I showed him my measures of the faint object near Mars which proved that it was moving with the planet. On 17 August while waiting and watching for the outer moon, the inner one was discovered. The observations of the 17th and 18th put beyond doubt the character of these objects and the discovery was publicly announced by Admiral Rodgers." 7. Orbits and Rotations Deimos's orbit is nearly circular and is close to Mars's equatorial plane. Deimos is possibly an asteroid that was perturbed by Jupiter into an orbit that allowed it to be captured by Mars, though this hypothesis is still controversial and disputed. Both Deimos and Phobos have very circular orbits which lie almost exactly in Mars' equatorial plane, and hence a capture origin requires a mechanism for circularizing the initially highly eccentric orbit, and adjusting its inclination into the equatorial plane, most likely by a combination of atmospheric drag and tidal forces; it is not clear that sufficient time was available for this to have occurred for Deimos. As seen from Mars, Deimos would have an angular diameter of no more than 2.5 minutes (sixty minutes make one degree), one twelfth of the width of the Moon as seen from Earth, and would therefore appear almost star-like to the naked eye. At its brightest ("full moon") it would be about as bright as Venus is from Earth; at the first- or third-quarter phase it would be about as bright as Vega. With a small telescope, a Martian observer could see Deimos's phases, which take 1.2648 days (Deimos's synodic period) to run their course. credits: nasa/ jpl-caltech/university of arizona credits : esa/dlr/fu berlin credits: viking project/nasa/jpl/ justin cowart credits: malin space science systems credits: nasa/jpl/cornell/ texas A&M credits: esa/dlr/fu berlin/j.cowart, cc by-sa 3.0/JHU/ap/asu/ssi/msss #InsaneCuriosity #DeimosMarsMoon #MarsFactsAndHistory
