Is E8 Lattice the True Nature of Reality? Or Theory of Everything?
E8 Lie group and E8 Lattice has sometimes been called the most beautiful mathematical structure in the world. Is it the theory of everything or the true nature of reality? It even has an entire research company behind it called "Quantum Gravity Research" Note: E8 root system animation provided courtesy of David Madore - www.madore.org. It is a 248 dimensional object, but it can also be thought of as an object that has 8 spatial dimensions, with 248 symmetries. Why is this structure important? Well, it happens to show up in parts of String Theory. But also in 2007, a theoretical physicist Antony Garrett Lisi published a paper proclaiming that the mathematics of this structure contained all the particles and forces in the universe. He called it the “the exceptionally simple theory of everything” What Lisi did is he found a relationship between this object and all the forces and particles we know about. According to the standard model, there are 4 fundamental forces in nature, strong force, weak force, electromagnetism and gravity. And there are 12 fundamental particles. In addition, each of these particles has a antiparticle of itself. In total, these make up all the elementary particles, and there are exactly 28 of them. 24 elementary particles, and 4 force carrier particles. Each of these distinct elementary particles has eight quantum numbers assigned to it, based on the charges each particle has. This brings the number of distinct particles to 224. Lisi found that he could mathematically equate all of these particles to one of the points in the E8 model. But the model has 248 points, not 224. So what about the empty 24 extra points? He simply created 24 new theoretical particles. Notice how the lines radiate from each point: Lisi also found patterns emerging between particles and forces like they happen in actual reality – for example, when photons interact with leptons, they create electrons. The same thing happens in the E8 lattice. The connections shown within points on the E8 match up to real, known connections between particles in our physical world. One of the particles he assigned to this shape behaves very much like the force carrier for gravity – a graviton. And this is the key to Lisi claiming that this could be the “theory of everything.” – because it combines matter particles and gravity in one framework. So Basically, all the normal things we know about can be described in terms of algebraic objects, and each of these objects happens to sit inside this complicated E8 structure. Lisi's theory does have some problems. One of the biggest problems with the theory is that Lisi combines the force carrying particles, Bosons with the matter particles. String theory does this too, but with the rigorous mathematics to go with it. This math is not present in E8, so Lisi combining these appears to be arbitrary. In addition, a leading mathematician and expert on Lie groups, Skip Garibaldi wrote a paper in 2010 which mathematically disproved Lisi. But Lisi came back with counter arguments to that. But the elephant in the room is the 24 new theoretical particles that come out of this theory. So it requires the existence of undiscovered matter. However, since the startup of the Large Hardon Collider, it is possible one of lisi’s 24 new theoretical particles could be found. Lisi himself says, "I'm the first to admit that it's a long shot." In fact, I think that even if one of the new theoretical particles is found, it would be a huge breakthrough towards proving this theory is on the right track. How does this compare to string theory? At least there is a way to prove it, unlike string theory – where we don’t really have a way to prove it. And although E8 has a vast number of dimensions, the physical universe described by the theory would have only the four dimensions we are familiar with and not the 10 or 11 of string theory. You may have heard of a research organization called Quantum Gravity Research. This group has built a whole company around the idea of E8 being the theory of everything. They have some really well produced and slick videos on you tube that you can check out for yourself. They are like mini movies with actors, special effects, and animations. So I commend them for making this science approachable to everyday people. The problem with their videos is they are mixing actual proven concepts in physics with a lot of unproven concepts, including new age mysticism. This really diminishes their credibility in my view because the viewer doesn’t know which part is true and which part is conjecture. E8 is a real mathematical structure. It has been around for a long time. Quantum Gravity Research people did not come up with it. And I think it’s an interesting idea. All that needs to be done, is for the large hadron collider to find at least one of 24 theoretical particles, and this theory may get hoards of scientists singing its praises.

Personally, I did it many times… Ok, the question is very simple, but what about the answer? Well, you may think that nobody knows it, and that is somehow true, but… you may be surprised to hear that scientists actually tried to answer it by using… a mathematical equation! Yes, you’ve heard it right: there is a mathematical formula that attempts to estimate how many other civilizations there are in the Universe! Curious to hear more about it? Stick with me and I’ll tell you more! Since the very first moment scientists started to look at the sky, they also started to wonder whether we are alone in the Universe or not. Astronomers always had different (and sometimes, radically different) opinions on this topic. There are several reasonable arguments used by both sides to support their respective opinion. Those who claim there are other civilizations out there, simply point out to the huge number of stars and galaxies in the Universe, predicting that it’s nearly impossible that there is no other planet with intelligent life except from us. On the other hand, those who claim we are alone in the Universe, point out to the fact that we have never received any message from other hypothetical civilizations, and this seems very unlikely, because a very advanced civilization should have been able to “show” its presence to us, somehow. There are many other arguments in favour of one hypothesis or the other. For instance, experts also claim that the average lifetime of an intelligent form of life is very short: so, an hypothetical civilization could have already existed in the past, but it’s now extinct, and this is why we don’t see them now. All of this is to show you that in order to answer this big question, there are several factors we have to take into account first. But we are lucky: somebody already did it for us! The guy who did the work for us is Frank Donald Drake, one of the most prominent American astronomers, involved in several important projects for the search of extra-terrestrial life: for instance, you may have heard about the SETI project. He is also the co-creator (together with Carl Sagan, another famous American astronomer) of the “Arecibo message”, an interstellar message broadcasted into space using the Arecibo radio telescope, containing information about the Earth, the Solar System, humanity, and much more, in an attempt to communicate with potential civilizations living far away from us. But let’s go back to our main question: how many other extra-terrestrial intelligent civilizations are there in the Universe? As we said previously, there are several factors to take into account when we try to estimate the number of civilizations in the Universe. In 1961, Drake tried to list all these factors, summarizing them into a formula, known as “the Drake equation”. The equation is very simple: the number of civilizations with which we may communicate in our galaxy, indicated with N, is just the product of this bunch of variables: Ok I know, that’s a lot of stuff.. but don’t freak out.. just stick with me and in a few minutes everything will be crystal clear! Let’s start from the left of the formula. The first parameter, , is the average rate of star formation in our galaxy. In simple words, it tells us how many stars form on average in our galaxy. That makes sense: the number of possible civilizations, N, will depend on the number of stars; the more frequently new stars form, the higher , and the higher the chances of other forms of life to appear. I see what you are about to object… #InsaneCuriosity #DrakeEquation #Physics

The Mystery Of The Massive Star Disappeared!
We all know how endless our Universe is and that is the main reason why the astronomers want to dive deeper and deeper into it in order to discover something new. In this video scientists need to give answers to something that has been discovered and it is considered to be a mystery. Suddenly a massive star disappeared ! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe for more videos:https://www.youtube.com/c/InsaneCuriosity?sub_confirmation=1? Business Enquiries: lorenzovareseaziendale@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let’s start with our topic that has to do with a Unique star. When we look up in the sky, we can see the Sun, the Moon and the Stars and as we have mentioned before the stars are astronomical objects consisting of a luminous spheroid of plasma held together by their own gravity. Consequently, the study of the birth, life, and deat* of stars is central to the field of astronomy and what we know is that they are huge celestial bodies made mostly of hydrogen and helium that produce light and heat from the churning nuclear forges inside their cores. Stars are the most widely recognized astronomical objects, and represent the most fundamental building blocks of galaxies. Imagine that our galaxy, the Milky Way, contains an estimated 300 billion stars and we are able to perceive with the naked eye, around 2.000-2.500 stars. It is worth mentioning that stars have life cycles based on their initial mass. For instance the larger a star, the shorter its life, although most massive stars live for billions of years. We do know that Stars form in huge clouds of gas and dust. Gravity causes these clouds to contract thus drawing the gas closer. As these materials accumulate in the center, density raises and pressure increases. This causes the matter to heat up and glow while the mass increases. Temperatures and pressure continually grow until hydrogen can be fused. The heat generated by this nuclear fusion causes the gas to expand and when hydrostatic equilibrium is reached, the star is born and we are able to observe and analyze them. One of these stars, is known as Kinman Dwarf or PHL 293B. The reason why we are going to pay attention to this specific star, is because something extraordinary happened…and our job here is to give further details as what happened seem to be difficult to comprehend. So let’s take things from the beginning and let the journey begin. The PHL 293B star belongs to the dwarf galaxy in the constellation of Aquarius and it lies approximately 75 million light-years away. Let’s see on a closer look this galaxy. A dwarf galaxy is a small galaxy composed of about 100 million up to several billion stars. Dwarf galaxies' formation and activity are thought to be heavily influenced by interactions with larger galaxies. Astronomers identify numerous types of dwarf galaxies, based on their shape and composition. A good example of a dwarf galaxy is the Large Magellanic Cloud, located about 160,000 light-years from Earth. It contains about 1/10th the mass of the Milky Way, and has about 10% of its stars. Two other dwarf galaxies are even closer to the Milky Way, and have been captured by our galaxy’s gravity. Other dwarf galaxies are just remnants that have been torn apart by the Milky Way’s gravity, and are currently being incorporated into the structure of our galaxy. The massive star called PHL 293B, is one of the brightest and largest star known until today and many astrophysics claim that we may have detected one of the most massive stars of the local Universe going gently into the night. In this point we need to mention that massive stars are among the most important sources of ionizing photons and chemical elements, producing a significant proportion of the elements currently present in the Universe. They are instrumental to the understanding of a variety of astrophysical topics, including the link between supernova and gamma-ray bursts to the nature of their respective progenitors as well as the early evolution of the Universe. Let’s go back to the PHL 293B star now. The star is considered to be 2,5 million times brighter than our sun and scientists have been studying PHL 293B for a long period of time. To be more specific, in the 2000-2010s, astronomers started observing the giant star and all these ten years they have been studying this mysterious star in this galaxy and their observations indicated that the star was shining brightly especially between 2001 and 2011. Different teams of astronomers were regularly observing this star to obtain more information and they discovered that this star is in a late stage of its evolution. #InsaneCuriosity #MassiveStar

Voids And Supervoids: The Weird Part Of The Universe!
If you have ever watched a starry sky at night from a remote location, far away from any city and not affected by light pollution, you may have remained astonished by the huge amount of stars that cover the sky. In fact, you may have been thinking that the Universe is probably a place very dense of stars and galaxies. This is somehow true, but… only in some parts of the Universe. In fact, while galaxies are quite rich of stars, the space between galaxies is generally empty. And sometimes, these intergalactic spaces can reach enormous sizes, forming huge regions of Universe that are almost completely dark and empty! These regions are known as “voids” and “supervoids”. You want to hear more about them? Watch this video and I will tell you more! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe for more videos:https://www.youtube.com/c/InsaneCuriosity?sub_confirmation=1? Business Enquiries: lorenzovareseaziendale@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- While you watch a spectacular starry sky at night, you may think the Universe is quite uniform, with stars and galaxies scattered all around with no particular differences between one region and another. That is not actually true! In fact, the structure of the Universe is quite weird. Let’s start our journey from a small scale, and then we will enlarge our vision to see what happens at bigger scales. As you know, stars are grouped into galaxies, which is a concept you are probably familiar with. Galaxies contain an enormous number of stars: hundred millions, some of them even hundred trillions! In fact, all the stars you see in the sky are part of our galaxy: the Milky Way. While galaxies are very huge objects, the distance separating them is even larger. For instance, while the Milky Way has a diameter of about 100,000 light years (remember: one light year is the distance covered by light in one year), the closest galaxy, Andromeda, is 2.5 million light years away: it’s about 25 times the size of the Milky Way. But despite these numbers being already very large, galaxies are still quite close to each other, in astronomical terms. In fact, galaxies tend to “gather” into groups, due to the effect of the force of gravity bringing them together; these large groups are called “clusters”. The Local Group, the cluster where the Milky Way is located, contains about 100 galaxies. And the story goes on: these clusters are gathered into even larger structures, known as “superclusters”, containing thousands of galaxies. Here it’s where things get pretty big. Gravity is always the driving force that shapes the Universe, and it keeps playing its role at this level as well. In fact, even these superclusters attract each other. However, at this point they do not gather into “megaclusters” or something like that, rather into longer, thin structures known as “filaments”. In fact, if we could look at the Universe at this scale, it would look like a gigantic spider web (but without that regular geometric pattern!), with these filaments corresponding to the strings of the net. So, we now know how the Universe looks like at its largest scale, at least as far as we know. These filaments are massive structures, spanning over million light years. But what’s in the space between the strings of this huge spider web? Is there anything between these filaments? That’s where things get more intriguing, and that’s where we reached the main topic of this video: these spaces between filaments are those called “voids” and sometimes “supervoids”! What are they? To understand what voids and supervoids are, we have to talk about density first. Density is a physical quantity describing the amount of matter in a fixed volume. If we look at a smaller scale, density tells us how close are atoms and molecules to each other in an object or a substance. Higher density means that the atoms and molecules are closer to each other, and so there is less empty space between them. Now we can apply this concept to a larger scale: the Universe. But in this model, the atoms are replaced by galaxies. Different regions of the Universe have different densities: while most galaxies are concentrated in the filaments, voids are almost completely empty. In fact, the density of these voids is less than one tenth of the average density of the rest of the Universe. Therefore, these voids are big regions of space relatively empty, containing very few galaxies compared to clusters and superclusters. Some of these voids can even “merge” together forming huge ones, which are sometimes referred to as “supervoids”. The biggest known supervoid, the Boötes void, has a diameter of about 330 million light years: it’s more than 3000 times the size of our galaxy! It’s no coincidence that it is sometimes called “the Great Nothing”. #InsaneCuriosity

The Most Massive Objects In The Universe!
Did you know that our universe is so big that we cannot really approximate its actual size? Now that you can imagine how our universe is extremely big, it’s easy to grasp that it’s filled with wonder-souly massive objects. Curious to know these objects in order? Keep watching! The Most Massive Objects in the Universe. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe for more videos:https://www.youtube.com/c/InsaneCuriosity?sub_confirmation=1? Business Enquiries: lorenzovareseaziendale@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prior to stating the list of the most massive objects in the universe, it’s crucial to understand the concept of mass along with the astronomical mass units. Mass by definition is the measure of the amount of matter in an object usually measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg), however due to the difficulties in measuring and expressing astronomical data in the international system of units (SI units); the Astronomical System of Units was developed in 1979 in which there was a redefinition of units of mass, time and length and the astronomical constants as well. The astronomical unit of mass is the solar mass aka the mass of the sun which is approximately equal to 1.98892 * 10^(30) kg and it’s the standard unit of describing the mass of stars and galaxies. Passage 1 When it comes to cosmology, the term object is a loose concept because the universe is filled up with so many objects such as planets, stars, black holes and pulsars. However, one must ask “is any structure of gravitationally bound matter considered to be an object?” If the answer is yes, then we must consider nebulae, galaxies, galaxy clusters and the clusters of the galaxy clusters as objects as well. Moreover, we should consider the cosmic web, which is an overarching structure that holds all the matter in the universe as an object. Therefore, in this video we are introducing the most massive objects in the universe covering most of their types in descending order: 10- As you probably know, the most massive object in the universe from the beginning of time is the universe itself right before the moment of the big bang. The big bang model states that the universe at the beginning 13.7 billion years ago was in an extremely hot and dense state, just try to imagine the total mass of the universe condensed into extremely infinitesimally small point-like singularity. 9- Dark Energy; which constitutes 68% of the universe- you may wonder how on earth would energy be massive?! But thanks to Einstein’s energy-mass famous equation E=mc^(2) where c is the speed of light, transforming energy into mass is trivial. You may also have heard of the dark energy previously but let me explain its importance in detail… scientists in the early 1990s were fairly certain about some dynamics of the universe’s expansion; such that it might have enough energy density to stop its expansion and recollapse or it might have so little energy that it would never stop expanding, however, the gravitational forces were certain to slow the expansion as time went on due to the fact that our universe is full of matter and the attractive force of gravity pulls all matter together. However, in 1998, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of very distant supernovae showed that a long time ago; the universe was actually expanding more slowly than it is today. In other words, the expansion of the universe has not been slowing down due to gravity, as everyone expected, but it has been accelerating and something was causing this acceleration. Eventually, theorists still do not know what the correct explanation is but they have given the solution a name, it’s called the dark energy. More is unknown than is known about dark energy, the amount of dark energy is known because we know how it influences the universe’s expansion. There Are three possible explanations of dark energy, One explanation is that it’s a property of space -yes space has many amazing properties, many of which are just beginning to be understood- Einstein was the first to realize that empty space can possess its own energy, furthermore, it’s possible for more space to come into existence. And because this energy is a property of space itself, it would not be diluted as the space expands. Additionally, as more space comes into existence, more of this space-energy will appear which will be the reason that the universe will expand faster and faster. Unfortunately, there are some issues regarding this fancy model and related to the cosmological constant. 8- Dark matter which constitutes 27% of the universe. #InsaneCuriosity #MostMassiveObjectsInTheUniverse #TheBiggestStar #TheBiggestBlackhole

What causes an attraction or repulsion? Why does electromagnetism and gravity have infinite range, but the strong and weak force have a small range? Quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and Quantum electrodynamics (QED) are discussed. All forces, except maybe gravity, are mediated by force carrying particles called gauge bosons. They operate by same mechanism: the exchange of virtual bosons. Photons carry the electromagnetic interaction, gluons carry the strong force, and the W and Z bosons for the weak force. The graviton would be the boson for gravity. Real versions of these gauge bosons have been observed, except the graviton. What is a virtual particle? These exist due to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. The uncertainty principle states that the change in energy times the time of a particle’s existence must be equal to Planck’s constant over 4*pi. This means virtual particles can exist as long as its for a really short time. How does an exchange of these virtual particles result in a force? Imagine two people on a boat throwing basketballs at each other. As the two throw the balls away from each other, there is a transfer of momentum that occurs. This moves the boats apart. For attraction, the same two boaters are holding a boomerang. When one person throws the Boomerang, it circles back such that the other person catches it facing the opposite direction. The boats pull closer together. When two similar charges are near each other, quantum theory shows that the exchange of virtual particles create an energy gradient between the two particles so that there is a higher energy state between the charged particles. Since particles want to be exist at their lowest energy state, they move apart. The opposite happens when dissimilar charges are near each other. A lower energy state is created between the two particles. Electromagnetism has an infinite range because photons have zero mass. But the Gluon is also massless, so why does the strong force have a short range? This involves quantum chromodynamics or QCD. The main difference between photons and gluons is that photons are electrically neutral so they do not interact with themselves. Gluons however carry a charge so that they interact with each other. This limits their range because they form a kind of link or rubber band with not only the quarks, but also with themselves. Gluons are electrically neutral but carry a color charge. Color is just a metaphor to describe a new kind of property of particles. There are three kinds of color charges, Red, green and blue. Color charges have to be balanced by either a combination of the three colors to make a neutral white, or by color-anticolor pairs. Electromagnetism and gravity get weaker as objects get farther apart but the force between two quarks gets stronger as they get further apart. It works like a rubber band. If you try to pull two quarks apart the force between them gets very strong. This tends to pull a quarks back into the proton or neutron. However, if you knock a quark very far away from the neutron or proton, the energy becomes so large that the rubber band-like force created by gluons breaks. And the energy released creates a new quark/ani-quark pair, called a meson. And these are the residual particles that mediate the velcro-like force that keeps protons and Neutrons tied together in the nucleus. #fundamentalforces How does the weak force work? It is more like a power that certain particles have to turn themselves into different particles. A neutron is composed of two down quarks and one up quark. A proton is composed of two up quarks and one down quark. Any neutron can turn into a proton by converting one of its down quarks to an up quark. It does this by emitting a negatively charged W boson. This turns the down quark into an up quark, changing the particle from a neutron to a proton. Since the W minus boson carries a negative charge, the Neutron now becomes a proton with a positive +1 charge to balance charges. The reason this interaction has a very short range is because the W boson is quite massive, so it just doesn’t survive for very long. Since gravity has infinite range, its carrier particle the Graviton should also have no mass. The reason we don’t have a quantum gravity theory is because at quantum scales, It is overwhelmed by the other three forces. So it is, for now, treated in mostly in geometric terms using general relativity.

Business Enquiries: lorenzovareseaziendale@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9. The Discovery Of Europa Europa is just one of many moons around Jupiter, and each one has a history that is all their own, including their discovery by a certain legendary astronomer. Europa, along with Jupiter's three other large moons, Io, Ganymede, and Callisto, was discovered by Galileo Galilei on January 8th, 1610, and possibly independently by Simon Marius. Though Galileo himself has called this a false claim, and because he was the first to truly document it, he was given the credit. Ironically, at first, Galileo couldn't separate Europa and Io in the sky because of the light that they were giving off. Thus, he had to wait another day and then found out that they were indeed two separate moons. Europa is named after Europa, daughter of the king of Tyre, a Phoenician noblewoman in Greek mythology. Like all the Galilean satellites, Europa is named after a lover of Zeus, the Greek counterpart of Jupiter. Europa was courted by Zeus and became the queen of Crete. The naming scheme was suggested by Simon Marius, who attributed the proposal to Johannes Kepler. The names fell out of favor for a considerable time and were not revived in general use until the mid-20th century. In much of the earlier astronomical literature, Europa is simply referred to by its Roman numeral designation as Jupiter II (a system also introduced by Galileo) or as the "second satellite of Jupiter". In 1892, the discovery of Amalthea, whose orbit lay closer to Jupiter than those of the Galilean moons, pushed Europa to the third position. The Voyager probes discovered three more inner satellites in 1979, so Europa is now counted as Jupiter's sixth satellite, though it is still referred to as Jupiter II. And think about it, all of that struggle just to find and then name a singular moon. 8. Size and Relation To Jupiter With an equatorial diameter of 1,940 miles (3,100 kilometers), Europa is about 90 percent the size of Earth’s Moon. So if we replaced our Moon with Europa, it would appear roughly the same size in the sky as our Moon does, but brighter — much, much brighter. Europa’s surface is made of water ice and so it reflects 5.5 times the sunlight than our Moon does. Europa orbits Jupiter at about 417,000 miles (671,000 kilometers) from the planet, which itself orbits the Sun at a distance of roughly 500 million miles (780 million kilometers), or 5.2 astronomical units (AU). One AU is the distance from Earth to the Sun. Light from the Sun takes about 45 minutes to reach Europa. Because of the distance, sunlight is about 25 times fainter at Jupiter and Europa than at Earth. Which is important to note for several reasons. Not the least of which is because when it comes to sunlight, you need it to be strong to harness its energy. Which is why solar power is feasible on Earth. On Jupiter, or in this Europa, that wouldn't be as feasible because the fainter wouldn't generate as much power. Despite this though, as noted, the reflective surface does harness the light that does come around and makes the surface much brighter. Which has helped in part to the various probes and satellites that have tried to study it over the years. 7. Orbits And Rotations Europa orbits Jupiter every 3.5 days and is locked by gravity to Jupiter, so the same hemisphere of the moon always faces the planet. Jupiter takes about 4,333 Earth days (or about 12 Earth years) to orbit the Sun (a Jovian year). Jupiter’s equator (and the orbital plane of its moons) are tilted with respect to Jupiter’s orbital path around the Sun by only 3 degrees (Earth is tilted 23.5 degrees). This means Jupiter spins nearly upright so that the planet, as well as Europa and Jupiter’s other dozens of moons, do not have seasons as extreme as other planets do. Jupiter’s moons Io, Europa, and Ganymede are in what is called a resonance – every time Ganymede orbits Jupiter once, Europa orbits twice, and Io orbits four times. Over time, the orbits of most large satellites or planets tend to become circular, but in the case of these three satellites, the resonance produces a forced eccentricity since the satellites line up with each other at the same points in their orbits over and over, giving each other a small gravitational tug that keeps their orbits from becoming circular. Because Europa's orbit is elliptical (slightly stretched out from circular), its distance from Jupiter varies, and the moon’s near side feels Jupiter’s gravity more strongly than its far side. #InsaneCuriosity #EuropaMoon #TheSolarSystem

The Four Fundamental Forces of nature - their origin & function
• Signup for your FREE trial to The Great Courses Plus here: https://ift.tt/2CtjWbw. if you took a notebook, a plastic bottle, a toaster, and a glass container and burned them in a fire hot enough, around 10^31 degrees Celsius, all the particles and forces, would become one entity. This is what is believed to have existed at the moment of the big bang. All matter is composed of 6 quarks and 6 leptons and their 12 antiparticle pairs. But matter is subject to 4 fundamental forces that result in every action in the universe. These 4 forces are the strong force which binds the nuclei of atoms together, the weak force which is responsible for some kinds of radioactivity, electromagnetism responsible for the root cause of chemistry, and gravity which binds us to the earth. The best way to understand this and how these forces emerged is to visualize what happened at the big bang, when everything was one. Time began at the smallest time, Planck time, 10^-43 seconds. We are ignorant of anything that might have occurred prior to this 1st epoch of existence, called the Planck Epoch. All the forces and particles were in a point smaller than the size of a proton. Gravity separated from everything else, as it was the first force to separate out from the other 3 forces. The temperatures at this stage were 10^31 degrees Celsius, and the energies were in the range of 10^19 giga electron volts. The strings of string theory and the loops of loop quantum gravity, if those theories are correct, come into existence here. The next era, called the Grand Unified epoch lasts from the first Planck second up to about 10^-35 seconds. The Strong and weak force and electromagnetism were all unified. But shortly after this period, the strong force separated from the other two - electromagnetism and the weak force, which were united as one force called the electroweak force. Temperatures were now around 10^26 degrees Celsius. Cosmic inflation occurred. The universe which went from tinier than the size of a proton to the size of a grapefruit. At 10^-12 seconds, called the quark epoch, the electroweak force split into the weak force and electromagnetism. So at this point, all the 4 forces became distinct. The temperature of the universe cooled to 10^15 degrees Celcius, and energies are about 100 GeV. We know a lot about the universe up to this era because such energy levels can be modeled in particle accelerators. The Higgs field exists at this stage. That brings us to today, 13.8 billion years later, where the average temperature of the universe is -270 degrees C, and energy is 0.25 eV Gravity and electromagnetism are similar in that their mathematical formulas look nearly identical. Newtons law of universal gravitation is F= G Mm/r^2 . were G is Newton’s gravitational constant. Coulomb’s law of electric force between charged bodies is F = k Qq/r^2 where k is Coulomb’s constant. This means that the earth has a gravitational effect not just on the moon, but also some effect on every other massive object in the universe. This is a very small effect, but it is non zero. And since gravity effects all masses, this effect is the most influential force on a cosmic scale. But the electrostatic force between charges also extends infinitely far away. And this force is much greater than the force of gravity - 10^36 times greater. So why isn’t electromagnetism the most dominant force in the universe? ...because on large scales electric charges of most objects tend to cancel each other out. Large objects tend to be neutral. If large things were not electrically neutral, this force would completely dominate the universe. But Electromagnetism still has a big influence. It is the basis of all chemistry. So if electromagnetism is so strong, then what keeps multiple protons bound in the nucleus of atoms? They are kept glued together with a force one hundred times stronger, the strong nuclear force. However, it extends only as far as the width of a proton. This force is not simply the opposite of electromagnetism because it also holds electrically neutral atoms in the center of atoms. The release of this force is the energy behind nuclear bombs. The fission and fusion of atoms releases huge amounts of binding energy from the nucleus, which results from the strong force. It is also responsible for most of the mass of any object, not the Higgs Field. #fourfundamentalforces The weak force is responsible for beta radiation, which is the emission of electrons or positrons. One of the most important processes in nature is the beta decay of a neutron. If this decay did not occur, then the universe would have been full of neutrons, and no atoms would have ever formed. And we would not have life. But it’s effective length is only about one thousandth the diameter of a proton.

The Finding And Naming Of Ganymede At present, Jupiter has 79 moons, some of which have only been discovered recently. But in regards to Ganymede, it may have an origin that is far beyond the histories of the other moons. Chinese astronomical records report that in 365 BC, Gan De detected what might have been a moon of Jupiter, probably Ganymede, with the naked eye. However, Gan De reported the color of the companion as reddish, which is puzzling since the moons are too faint for their color to be perceived with the naked eye. Sh* Shen and Gan De together made fairly accurate observations of the five major planets. On January 7th, 1610, Galileo Galilei observed what he thought were three stars near Jupiter, including what turned out to be Ganymede, Callisto, and one body that turned out to be the combined light from Io and Europa; the next night he noticed that they had moved. On January 13th, he saw all four at once for the first time, but had seen each of the moons before this date at least once. By January 15th, Galileo came to the conclusion that the stars were actually bodies orbiting Jupiter. Thus, the discovery of the moons. Galileo originally called Jupiter's moons the Medicean planets, after the Medici family and referred to the individual moons numerically as I, II, III, and IV. Galileo's naming system would be used for a couple of centuries. It wouldn't be until the mid-1800's that the names of the Galilean moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, would be officially adopted, and only after it became apparent that naming moons by number would be very confusing as new additional moons were being discovered. In mythology, Ganymede was a beautiful young boy who was carried to Olympus by Zeus (the Greek equivalent of the Roman god Jupiter) disguised as an eagle. Ganymede became the cupbearer of the Olympian gods. The Greek/Roman pantheons are the epicenter of many names of both planets and moons in our solar system. 7. Orbits and Rotations Ganymede orbits Jupiter at a distance of 1,070,400 km, third among the Galilean satellites, and completes a revolution every seven days and three hours. Which indeed means that a "Day" on Ganymede is a week here on Earth, that would be something that would take some getting used to no doubt. Like most known moons, Ganymede is tidally locked, with one side always facing toward the planet, hence its day is seven days and three hours. Its orbit is very slightly eccentric and inclined to the Jovian equator, with the eccentricity and inclination changing quasi-periodically due to solar and planetary gravitational perturbations on a timescale of centuries. Ganymede participates in orbital resonances with Europa and Io: for every orbit of Ganymede, Europa orbits twice and Io orbits four times. Conjunctions (alignment on the same side of Jupiter) between Io and Europa occur when Io is at periapsis and Europa at apoapsis. Conjunctions between Europa and Ganymede occur when Europa is at periapsis. The longitudes of the Io–Europa and Europa–Ganymede conjunctions change with the same rate, making triple conjunctions impossible. Such a complicated resonance is called the Laplace resonance. There are two hypotheses for the origin of the Laplace resonance among Io, Europa, and Ganymede: that it is primordial and has existed from the beginning of the Solar System; or that it developed after the formation of the Solar System. A possible sequence of events for the latter scenario is as follows: Io raised tides on Jupiter, causing Io's orbit to expand (due to conservation of momentum) until it encountered the 2:1 resonance with Europa; after that the expansion continued, but some of the angular moment was transferred to Europa as the resonance caused its orbit to expand as well; the process continued until Europa encountered the 2:1 resonance with Ganymede. Eventually the drift rates of conjunctions between all three moons were synchronized and locked in the Laplace resonance. 6. Composition Ganymede has three main layers. A sphere of metallic iron at the center (the core, which generates a magnetic field), a spherical shell of rock (mantle) surrounding the core, and a spherical shell of mostly ice surrounding the rock shell and the core. The ice shell on the outside is very thick, maybe 800 km (497 miles) thick. #InsaneCuriosity #GanymedeMoon #TheSolarSystem
